Instruments sit in a dark theatre

GLOBE MUSIC.

Our record label captured concerts in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse

Globe Music was a project that set out to capture the intimacy of candlelit concerts in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse. The albums recorded are still available to purchase and enjoy.

Five musicians play string instruments on a stage
A musician sits at a drum set and reads music
Three musicians play wind instruments looking at sheets of music

A 17th century-style jewel box theatre, one of the great revelations of the space when it opened in 2014 was the crystalline acoustic that has quickly established it as a world class chamber music venue.

Our ambition for Globe Music was to bring together some of the world’s finest musicians in special, unexpected collaborations, to bottle a unique environment where music and the theatrical meet.

A video that was created for Soumik Datta’s King of Ghosts – the score was performed live and captured via recording as part of our Festival of Independence in June 2017.

KING OF GHOSTS

Sarod virtuoso Soumik Datta joins forces with City of London Sinfonia and Shakespeare’s Globe with an ecstatic original score for iconic filmmaker Satyajit Ray’s 1968 masterpiece, King of Ghosts.

This intensely charismatic music, part Indian classical music, part modern film score, part Hindustani dance, charmed and wowed our audiences when it played during the Globe’s Festival of Independence in June 2017.

SONGS FROM OUR ANCESTORS

Celebrating the candlelit intimacy and storytelling environment of the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, Songs from Our Ancestors marks the debut release of Globe Music.

The album features two of today’s most incomparable and imaginative artists; tenor Ian Bostridge and guitarist Xuefei Yang. Their eclectic journey traces a poetic path through history and place, that is both global and personal; from Shakespeare’s contemporary John Dowland, through Schubert, Britten and Chinese folk music, to contemporary composers Dominick Argento, Stephen Goss and Chen Yi.
