FROM ACTOR TO LEARNING CONSULTANT: TOM DAVEY

Through all this I hope to join the dots between my experiences as an actor working on Shakespeare plays and the challenges and opportunities experienced by teachers and young people in schools.

I have been working at Shakespeare‘s Globe, on and off, since 2008, first as an actor (I took part in the second-ever Playing Shakespeare production, playing Don Pedro in Much Ado About Nothing) then as a Globe Education Practitioner and, since 2015, as a Learning Consultant.

Globe Education Practitioners run workshops, teacher training days and courses. These events are held at the Globe or sometimes in schools and colleges. Now, as a Learning Consultant, I help train to up new practitioners as well as overseeing courses and schemes of work. Through all this I hope to join the dots between my experiences as an actor working on Shakespeare plays and the challenges and opportunities experienced by teachers and young people in schools.

Playing Shakespeare is such a special project. I’ve been in the cast twice and was an assistant director in 2018. To introduce people to this amazing theatre, many of whom who may not have been to any theatre before is a very special thing.

This year my role has been to oversee the workshops in schools, offering training and guidance to practitioners. These workshops are intended to engage students with the themes and content of the play and to prepare them for their trip to the Globe. I’ve been running the CPD (Continuing Professional Development) days for teachers too, demonstrating and exploring active approaches to Shakespeare for use in the classroom.

Tom played the role of Sir Andrew Aguecheek in this production. He takes on many different types of role at The Globe which demonstrates the diversity of careers and experiences you can have working in the arts.

JADZIA'S JOURNEY ACROSS THE GLOBE

That’s why I am writing to you, to show you that in the wondrous world which is the arts there are more jobs then you’d ever expect there to be.

So hello! I am one of the Website Content Assistants. My job is pretty awesome if I do say so myself, I work within the digital team and we work on the website, create video content and create emails as well as look after our various social media accounts. Day-to-day I focus on the website alongside my team, we create all the pages you see on this micro-site and shakespearesglobe.com.

You might be wondering how I came across my job? I was previously working in a different department for a year where I was doing something completely different. I was one of 4 apprentices working with education as the Operations Apprentice and I was in charge of room bookings for the whole organisation, as well as organising various operational things within the building. I was lucky enough to get a job after the apprentice job was finished in communications as a part of the digital team as the role I am currently in now.

I have always loved the Playing Shakespeare’s with Deusche Bank project and this year I got to be a part of it a lot more than previous years. I was able to take behind the scene photos on the Macbeth poster photoshoot. This is where I first met Elly Condron (Lady Macbeth) and Ekow Quartey (Macbeth), who had only met 10 minutes prior and then we started the shoot and took loads of images to create the poster’s that you see around this website, and also the lovely imagery that is in the programmes too.

From that we had a meet and greet that I got to attend- this is a meeting where we say who we are and what we do. This helps you to appreciate how many people go into a lovely project like this. After this meeting I had the honour of taking the various photos that you can see on the Character pages. Interacting with all the actors is such a lovely experience as they are all fantastic energetic people who are just so nice to talk to.

This wonderful project is a lot of hard work and there are several meetings that happen prior to even the cast being hired or even the play being chosen. I was a part of various meetings, and there were loads of meetings about what content will be going on to the website, what we will need to do, what content is going where and what is our main focus of the microsite. This year we wanted to focus on getting more teaching resources and making the microsite as a whole to be more personable but educational at the same time. Thats why I am writing to you, to show you that in the wondrous world which is the arts there are more jobs then you’d ever expect there to be.
