Join our Board of Trustees for 2022
We’re looking for individuals who can sharpen our thinking as we plan for our recovery and rebuilding over the next three years
Our Board of Trustees is responsible for providing appropriate oversight, governance, and leadership here at Shakespeare’s Globe. They come from a range of backgrounds, including theatre and performance, education, business, and finance. In addition, the Board also share a commitment to, and passion for supporting our work as we engage current and future generations and the conservation and care of our unique playhouses.
Following a combined 26 years of service, Trustees Patrick Figgis, Cynthia Hall, Dame Anne Pringle, and Jenny Topper OBE retire in Spring this year, and we are therefore looking for at least five new Trustees to join our Board in 2022.
Our Trustees hold dual responsibilities as charity trustees and company directors. As we look to recovery and a thriving future, we’re looking for individuals who can sharpen the our thinking, bringing in new and diverse thinking as we plan for our recovery and rebuilding from the major effects of the pandemic on our organisation and the cultural arts sector.
We have a proud record of financial independence, innovation, and excellence on and off-stage, and continue to make tough decisions for survival. As vacancies on the Board appear, we’re taking the opportunity to become an even more relevant, and ambitious organisation that is more reflective of our society than ever before. The Board works in partnership with our CEO and Directorate team, delegating day-to-day operations and the creative aspects of the work to the expertise of our dedicated staff and volunteers.
“This is a wonderful opportunity to appoint fresh voices and talent to our Board as we look to rebuild following a very tough pandemic. I would like to thank Patrick, Cynthia, Anne, and Jenny for their outstanding service to the Globe. Organisations across the UK have had to ask for more support over these past few years than ever, and their unparalleled dedication and guidance has been greatly appreciated.”
— Margaret Casely-Hayford CBE, Chair
As well as securing a new Treasurer with the requisite skills, we’re keen to hear from candidates with experience gained in theatre production, creative industries, digital (new technology, film making & distribution), marketing and communications, delivering major capital projects, commercial, risk and audit, and change leadership.
We are equally keen to hear from candidates who do not meet these specific criteria but believe they could actively contribute to our thinking and to our future success and resilience.
Previous experience as a Trustee is not necessary, as we are committed to full and appropriate induction, mentoring, training, and support for all new Trustees.
“My four years on the Board of the Globe have been stimulating and stretching, and I feel it’s been a privilege to give my support to this extraordinary organisation. I became a Trustee as I believe in representation of freelancers and artists at the highest level and am convinced that we need a wide range of voices to represent many points of view and to both support and challenge. We are searching for greater diversity of voices in senior roles, and so are particularly keen to hear from candidates from backgrounds currently under-represented in our leadership and governance. We need Trustees with experience of Boards and business, but we also need people to bring passion, new ideas and perspectives, curiosity, and humour. We must ask profound questions about the Globe’s role in all the communities we serve and shape a new narrative and strategy for the future.”
— Nell Leyshon, Deputy Chair and Chair of Nominations Committee
