Children as storytellers

Suitable for years 1 – 4

Children as Storytellers sees the Globe support primary school teachers to incorporate drama techniques into their classroom practice. Teachers take part in professional development led by Globe Education Practitioners, who then work alongside teachers in their classrooms, using dramatic storytelling techniques to teach two Shakespeare plays.

It will also develop pupils’ core speaking, listening, communication, language, drama and expressive arts skills through active participation, play and performance.

Key activities

Module I delivery

  • Storytelling performance(s) on Module I play
  • Full day of CPD on Module I play for each participating teacher
  • Parent and Governor Storytelling workshop(s) to introduce techniques
  • Five 60 minute workshops per class with a Globe Education Practitioner
  • Mentoring and team-teaching on Storytelling approaches for the participating teachers

Module II delivery

  • Option of Storytelling on Module II play
  • Full day of CPD on Module II play for each participating teacher
  • Five teacher-led workshops
  • Five teacher-led literacy sessions in between workshops
  • Coaching visit from a Globe Learning Consultant to provide feedback
  • Support to run an in-school session to disseminate learning to all teaching staff

To support delivery of the above we also provide

  • eaching resources including modules with session plans and activities
  • Storytelling sacks for practical work on each story

Available texts

We have several play options for each year group. These have been chosen as they reflect themes that are pertinent to the age-group, and provide opportunities for relevant cross-curricular links:

  • Year 1: The Winter’s Tale, The Tempest, A Misdummer Night’s Dream, Twelfth Night, Henry V,
  • Year 2: The Winter’s Tale, The Tempest, Julius Caesar, A Misdummer Night’s Dream
  • Year 3: Julius Caesar, A Misdummer Night’s Dream
  • Year 4: Julius Caesar, A Misdummer Night’s Dream

LOCATION AND COSTS

The CPD can be run at the Globe or in the school. The rest of the project takes place within your school.

Due to the bespoke nature of the project (how many teachers – and therefore classes – you would want to participate), please contact us to discuss your requirements and we can provide a quotation for you based around these.

Dates and times

The project is designed to run over two half terms, with two modules each taking 5 weeks to deliver. However, we can be flexible with the schedule to suit your school’s particular needs. We will arrange the individual in-school sessions based around your school’s timetable, subject to availability.
